On 6 December 2011, to mark International Human Rights Day, United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gave a historic speech at the United Nations in Geneva declaring that LGBT rights are human rights and human rights are LGBT rights. On 7 March 2012, at a Human Rights Council meeting on “Violence and Discrimination based on Sexual Orientation or Gender Identity”, U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon delivered a historic speech asking countries around the world to decriminalize same sex relationships and end discrimination of LGBT people.
